?Buzzing? Cudlin hopes to close gap

Damian Cudlin says his aim for his first MotoGP weekend is just to keep chipping away at the gap to the regular riders. The Australian, who currently races in Germany's IDM Supersport series, was a surprise choice to sit in for the injured Loris Capirossi at Pramac Ducati for this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. Despite being totally unfamiliar with MotoGP machinery and having never tried the Motegi track before, Cudlin got down to within 4.5 seconds of pacesetter Dani Pedrosa in practice today.

Rossi hoping for Motegi improvements

Valentino Rossi admits Ducati's past form at Motegi is a source of encouragement heading into the weekend, but says the team will split their focus between immediate improvements and long-term gains. Rossi, who only confirmed he would ride in Japan at Aragon, struggled on the new part-aluminium GP11.1 last time out in Spain, equalling his worst finish of the year in tenth. Though the result owed much to tyre wear issues, Rossi was downbeat after the race and says the team will simply have to see if it can improve at Motegi, a circuit Ducati has previously won at four times.

Ecclestone says FOTA unnecessary

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has taken a fresh swipe at the Formula One Teams' Association - saying its members would be better off focusing on making quicker racing cars. Ecclestone has always been sceptical about FOTA since it was formed in 2008 and, ahead of looming discussions to try and frame a fresh Concorde Agreement, he has once again questioned the benefit of the teams' body.

Hamilton faces race strategy dilemma

Lewis Hamilton must brace himself for a harder tyre strategy call in the Singapore Grand Prix after a push by his McLaren team to get a replacement super soft for the one he punctured in qualifying was rejected by the FIA. The McLaren driver punctured his right rear tyre during a run right at the end of Q2 - with it being suspected that the damage was caused when he ran over debris following Kamui Kobayashi's accident at the chicane. With drivers likely to need to call on all their sets of the super softs in the Singapore Grand Prix, the loss of that set could prove costly to Hamilton's chances of overhauling Red Bull Racing duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber and his own team-mate Jenson Button, who start ahead of him on the grid

Stoner vows to keep attacking

Casey Stoner has vowed to keep attacking at Motegi, despite extending his advantage over Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo following his eighth win of the season at Aragon. Stoner's current 44-point advantage means he could win the title by finishing third in the remaining four races, even if Lorenzo won every time. Stoner said however that he would continue to attack and would be looking for the win rather than championship points - particularly given his excellent form at Motegi last year, when he won for Ducati.

Hill wants more support for F1 tracks

Formula 1 chiefs need to do more to look after the interests of race promoters, claims former world champion Damon Hill, as tracks struggle to juggle the finances of hosting grands prix. Hill has first-hand experience of the difficulties that race organisers face through his experience as the president of Silverstone's owner the British Racing Drivers' Club. He stepped down from that role recently.

Plato on Rockingham pole

Reigning British Touring Car champion Jason Plato took pole position for this weekend's first race at Rockingham after a hard-fought session. A brief downpour just before the start made the track greasy, but most runners opted for slicks and the track was soon dry. Honda's Gordon Shedden was the first into the 1m24s, despite the championship leader carrying the maximum 45kg of success ballast and the extra 20kg that all turbo cars have to run this weekend

Dani Pedrosa believes he can still get on terms with Casey Stoner in the Aragon Grand Prix if he can make some final tweaks to his Honda's set-up. In all sessions so far, Stoner has started out with a massive advantage before being reeled in by Pedrosa.

Mercedes launches its new DTM car

Mercedes has launched the car that it will field in next year's DTM, the C-Class Coupe. The unveiling, which took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show, comes less than 24 hours after rival manufacturer Audi took the covers off its A5 DTM and was made by Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug and board chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche. As is the case with the Audi and BMW machines already revealed, the C-Coupe is built to the DTM's new 2012 technical regulations that aim to primarily reduce costs by 40 per cent and improve driver safety levels significantly.

Audi was left to rue the cost of two individual incidents which deprived both the #1 and #2 R18s the chance to fight for victory. Early aggression had seen Allan McNish take the lead in a thrilling sequence with Peugeot's Sebastien Bourdais, but the Scot's hopes of victory in the #2 Audi were undone when he collided with the #66 JMW Ferrari at Becketts.
